Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon A Time , the film that promises to be the last of Evangelion , surpassed the mark of 10 billion yen grossed on its 127th day at the Japanese box office. The film has already sold 6.55 million tickets.
The film reached the 9 billion yen mark on June 14, and reached 9.32 billion yen on June 20.
It is worth remembering that the film Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 began showing on June 12th and promises to be the last showing of the film. The new version contains “minor revisions” to some animation sequences, but does not change the film’s story. Most, but not all, cinemas will stop showing the film from July 21st.
The film premiered in Japan on March 8, and ranked first on its opening weekend. The film sold 2,194,533 tickets and grossed 3,338,422,400 yen in its first seven days in 466 Japanese cinemas. The new production sold 33.6% more tickets and grossed 45.1% more yen than the previous Evangelion film during its respective first seven days. It is also worth mentioning that the film was shown in 82 cinemas equipped for 4D screenings.
In its third week, the film surpassed the gross of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Refo , which grossed a total of 5.3 billion yen. The new film is now the most successful film in the series, both inside and outside Japan.
The team had previously postponed the film from January 23 to March 8 due to the state of emergency declared in four prefectures in Japan on January 8, which was later extended to a total of 11 prefectures. The film was previously delayed due to concerns regarding COVID-19 and its spread in and outside of Japan. The film was therefore originally scheduled to open in Japan on June 27, 2020.
