Muzan and Fear of Sun Breathing in Demon Slayer
During the Heian era, Muzan was transformed into a demon because of experimental treatment for his disease that went wrong. Since he realized that he had eternal life, his goal was to remain truly eternal. That was before he met Yoriichi Tsugikuni, a powerful demons hunters who almost killed him. Since then, Muzan has been fearsome for Yoriichi and his breath of the sun.
Although Muzan was extremely strong, just like any other demon. He had a weakness through the sunlight. Thus, the first time he came across Yoriichi, the inventor of the first breathing technique, he believed he could easily defeat him. However, Muzan underestimated Yoriichi's power and was quickly knocked down by Yoriichi's sun breathing technique. Before Yoriichi could take the final blow to Muzan, Muzan exploded into a thousand pieces of meat so he could escape and regenerate his body later.
After further escaping Yoriichi and is afraid for the first time, Muzan lived in fear after realizing that a demons hunter almost killed him. In this way Muzan only resurfaced properly after discovering about Nezuko and his ability to walk in the sun. He made the mission of his life ensure that, after Yoriichi's death, there were no other demons hunters capable of the breath of the sun and vowed to kill anyone who had the ability to use it. After that day, Muzan never directly confronted the hunters of demons, and he would only send his demons to do what he sent. This shows how much Yoriichi impacted Muzan's life.
The first meeting with Tanjiro
The first time Tanjiro has known Muzan is in Akasuka, Tokyo. While Tanjiro recognizes his smell and confronts him, Muzan pretends not to recognize him and quickly transforms a passerby into a demon without anyone noticing, causing a distraction and escaping. Thus he then meets his lower moon demons and orders them to kill the demon Slayer with the Hanafuda earrings. In addition, Muzan has a flashback from his battle against Yoriichi and remembers the fear he felt when he was about to die. It may be that he recognized the haanafuda earrings that Tanjiro was wearing, and that those Yoriichi was also wearing were the same. This shows that the Demomium's past has returned to haunt him, making him panic and now face his newly discovered fear.
As Tanjiro's family had preserved without knowing the sun's breathing technique through Kagura dance, Muzan saw Tanjiro as a direct threat to his well-being. Another reason he feared the sun's breathing is that the technique is able to circumvent demonic regeneration and back it. The reason Muzan aimed and killed Tanjiro's family was also because he wanted to get rid of the remaining people who knew about anything to do with the breath of the sun or had a connection with Yoriichi. As Tanjiro's descendants knew Yoriichi personally, Muzan wanted to ensure that the Kamado lineage was eradicated to avoid the emergence of new users of the technique and protecting itself from it.
