Akira director Jaume Collet-Serra shared news about the Cyberpunk film production with Coming Soon . According to the filmmaker, the only way to adapt Akira is to capture the spirit of the story and make it his own.
In other words, the film will be completely different from the manga, as well as its 1988 anime version produced by Katsuhiro Otomo .
He also adds:
“I hope I can bring good characters to the story. In the manga, I don't believe the protagonists are the main characters. In fact, no one is interesting. Tetsuo becomes important because bad things happen to him, and Kaneda is very two-dimensional. This is part of Japanese culture; we don't see great characters—they are used to move the story and philosophy forward.”
The director also spoke about faithfulness to the manga and anime. “ I don't think you can make a film about Akira and expect everyone to understand it. You have to make three or four films in one and put the essence of the story there. If you're a fan, you already know what it's about and you'll see that it's part of the same world. Simplifying would be a mistake. I think if a character tries to explain something about the plot to the audience at the end of the second act, we have a problem. [Akira] is more like an existential opera. It's something that can only be explained in the manga. Even in the anime, it's difficult to follow .”
Garrett Hedlund for some time . Early rumors about the adaptation suggested the story would be set in Neo-Manhattan instead of Neo-Tokyo and would star Ken Watanabe and Kristen Stewart. More news to come.
