Studio Ghibli's animation, Marnie's Memoirs (Omoide no Marnie), after pre-nomination, managed to be among the five films nominated for an Oscar in the best animated film category.
The film is based on the novel When Marnie Was There, by Joan G. Robinson and has a special tone, due to the fact that it will probably be the last film that the studio will release. This is due to the announcement of the film division and also due to the retirement of Hayao Miyazaki. Omoide no Marnie was written and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who is also responsible for part of the animation.
The film tells the story of Anna, a somewhat unhappy and lonely girl. One day, during a trip, the girl gets lost from her mother and finds an abandoned house, where she meets Marnie, with whom she manages to form a kind of friendship. However, Marnie is very mysterious, making Anna want to find out what secrets she hides.
In addition to Memórias de Marnie, the films Anomalisa, Inside Out, Shaun, the Sheep and the big surprise, the Brazilian film O Menino e o Mundo, are also competing.
