The Twitter user @Sandman_AP shared Eiichiro Oda's response from an old interview, in which he expressed his displeasure with the idea of One Piece being solely about the friendship between the protagonists.

“One Piece isn’t the Straw Hat Pirates’ bond. I hate that sort of thing. When I was a kid, I wasn’t at all happy with The Wizard of Oz, where the adventure is the real treasure. That story was unacceptable. Luffy has a great journey ahead of him, so give him a proper treasure.”

Currently, the theory that One Piece is the bond of friendship between the Straw Hat Pirates is still a strong belief among fans. However, according to the series creator, this theory will not come true, and what awaits Luffy at the end of his journey is a real treasure.

The story revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who gained a body made of rubber after eating the magical Gomu Gomu no Mi (Rubber Fruit). He was inspired by his childhood idol, the powerful pirate Shanks the Red-Haired, to become a pirate and sail on a journey across the sea to find the mythical treasure, the One Piece, and proclaim himself the King of the Pirates.
