The survey, conducted between August 2023 and March 2024, interviewed 12,562 students at different levels, including high school, elementary school and university.

The results showed that only 22.8% of high school boys had ever had this experience , a drop of 11.1 percentage points from the 2017 survey. Girls also saw a significant decrease, with 27.5% having kissed , a drop of 13.6 points. These numbers mark a decline from the 2005 peak, when half of all teens had already had this experience.
Experts suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to this decline, as social distancing affected physical interactions during a critical period of social development. Professor Yusuke Hayashi of Musashi University stated that confinement may have significantly impacted how adolescents experience their sexual awakening.
Furthermore, the survey also indicated a decline in sexual activity rates among students. Thus, the rate of sexual intercourse among girls decreased to 14.8%, and among boys to 12%. Social media reflected mixed reactions, ranging from surprise at the numbers to criticism of the survey's invasive approach.
