The survey, carried out between August 2023 and March 2024, interviewed 12,562 students at different levels, including high school, elementary and university.
The results showed that only 22.8% of high school boys had this experience , a drop of 11.1 percentage points compared to the 2017 survey. Girls also showed a significant reduction, with 27.5% having kissed , a drop of 13.6 points. These numbers mark a decline since the peak in 2005, when half of teenagers had already had this experience.
Experts suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic may have influenced this decrease, as social distancing affected physical interactions during a critical period of social development. Professor Yusuke Hayashi , from Musashi University, stated that the confinement may have significantly impacted the way teenagers experience their sexual awakening.
In addition, the survey also showed a drop in rates of sexual activity among students. Therefore, sexual intercourse rates among girls decreased to 14.8%, and among boys to 12%. Social networks reflected different reactions, from surprise at the numbers to criticism of the invasive approach to the research.
