The research, conducted between August 2023 and March 2024, surveyed 12,562 students from different levels, including high school, elementary school, and university.

The results showed that only 22.8% of high school boys had ever had this experience , a drop of 11.1 percentage points compared to the 2017 survey. Girls also showed a significant reduction, with 27.5% having kissed , a decrease of 13.6 points. These numbers mark a decline from the peak in 2005, when half of teenagers had already had this experience.

Experts suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic may have influenced this decrease, as social distancing affected physical interactions during a critical period of social development. Professor Yusuke Hayashi , from Musashi University, stated that confinement may have significantly impacted how adolescents experience their sexual awakening.
Furthermore, the research also indicated a drop in rates of sexual activity among students. Specifically, rates of sexual relations among girls decreased to 14.8%, and among boys to 12%. Social media reflected different reactions, ranging from surprise at the numbers to criticism of the research's invasive approach.
