(REVIEW) Sword Art Online: Progressive
Narrative
First, it's likely that the fan-favorite arc is in fact the Aincrad arc, where thousands of players find themselves trapped in a true "game of death" in Sword Art Online, with their only choice being to beat the game.
So, the arc is back in this new film, this time with the promise of being infinitely more detailed. In fact, the tendency is for this to actually happen, considering that the film only adapted up to the end of the 2nd episode of the original anime. In other words, it will still take a long time for this trilogy of films to be completed.
Asuna
On the other hand, it is undeniable that the character Asuna becomes a bit “defunct” as the SAO anime progresses, as the fact that Kirito steals almost all the spotlight for himself, therefore, the idea of give more emphasis to the character now.
Where right away, we are introduced to a character who does not have a good family structure, suffering heavy pressure, even though she always gets excellent grades and is hardworking. As soon as the “game of death” begins, the character appears mentally fragile, however, as the film progresses, we see the character take shape, and become the “Lightning” Asuna that fans are used to seeing.
Asuna and Mito
Just a few minutes into the film, we are introduced to the new character Mito, making her first appearance in the franchise. In fact, Mito is a true “addict” to games. Well, she even participates in regional championships. Besides, she is the one who pulls Asuna to play Sword Art Online.
Furthermore, she is the one who helps Asuna develop her swordsmanship skills in the deadly game. Where the two go through a troubled situation in the film. However, it's chilling at the end when Asuna shows that she doesn't hold any grudges against her friend. Because she shows gratitude for everything she taught her.
As for the development of the character Mito, I felt that it lacked a little. Because she is only presented as “the girl who rocks the games”. But that was basically all, who knows, maybe in future films the character will be better developed.
Asuna and Kirito
I confess that, being a big fan of the black swordsman, I was quite worried that the character Kirito would not be highlighted in this new film. But, he appears when needed, this time acting more as a supporting character.
In fact, it's worth remembering that despite having a lot of action, Sword Art Online was always a work that drew on the romance of these two. In fact, this novel is ABSURDLY better constructed. Since we see the exact moment they met and their bond being formed. The ending of the film is perhaps the biggest part that differs from the anime. Well, it made fans who are in love with this couple crazy about the sequel.
(REVIEW) Sword Art Online: Progressive – Conclusion
Finally, this is without a doubt the ultimate for those who are already passionate about the work. Where we managed to give better depth to a very interesting character, Asuna. So, above all, doing a real review here and there at some points in the Aincrad arc.
Not to mention, of course, the presence of singer LiSA, who is already an iconic voice in the anime's songs. The A-1 Pictures studio is doing excellent work, as expected.
And you, have you been to see the film in theaters?
