The highly anticipated film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has released several images, followed by a new trailer, to promote the second film, which premieres this year on December 13th. The third and final part, The Hobbit: There and Back Again , premieres on December 19th, 2014.

The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth, 60 years before The Lord of the Rings. In the story of The Hobbit, which adapts the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the 13 dwarves who form his company hire Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) for a journey to the Lonely Mountain, where they will try to reclaim the dwarves' homeland, which has been conquered by the dragon Smaug (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch). It is on this adventure that Bilbo finds the One Ring, which triggers The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
