The studio Comix Wave Films, responsible for hits like Your Name and Suzume, has announced the production of its new animated short film titled Shiranuhi. Scheduled to premiere on August 21, 2026 in Japan, the work promises to maintain the high visual standard that has made the studio famous in the anime.
Plot and direction by Shiranuhi
Set in late summer 1996 in Kumamoto, the plot focuses on Minato, a 10-year-old boy living a difficult life with his alcoholic father. The young boy seeks refuge in a local deity called Ben-chan. However, upon discovering he will be sent to a shelter, Minato turns to the legend of the magical light "Shiranui" to make a wish. The project marks the directorial debut of Ryo Katanosaka, who delivers a narrative full of emotion and mysticism.
Soundtrack and technical team
The soundtrack is composed by Taro Umebayashi, known for his work on Yuri!!! on Ice. Additionally, singer Ichiko Aoba performs the main theme, solidifying a melancholic and profound atmosphere.
