After more than eight years since the original announcement, Kyoto Animation studio presented the first trailer for the anime Sparks of Tomorrow , an adaptation of the light novel 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku by Hiro Yuki . The reveal took place during the studio's special event in Kyoto. In addition, the main cast and a 2026 premiere date were also confirmed .
The anime stars Kihachi Sakamoto, voiced by Yuma Uchida (Megumi Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen), and Inako Momokawa, voiced by Sora Amamiya (Chizuru Ichinose in Rent-A-Girlfriend).
The production carries an emotional weight for the studio. The project had been announced in 2018, but was ultimately interrupted after the tragic fire at KyoAni's Studio 1 in 2019. This fire claimed the lives of several animators, including Yasuhiro Takemoto (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid), Yoshiji Kigami , and Futoshi Nishiya (Free!).

Now, with the project's revival, Minoru Ota takes over the direction—his debut as a series director. He is joined by Tatsuhiko Urahata (Violet Evergarden) in script composition, Kohei Okamura in character designs, and Hitomi Koto in the soundtrack.
Set in an alternate early 20th-century Kyoto, where steam dominates technology, the story follows a boy and a girl as they seek to unravel the secret of the mysterious "20th-Century Electric Catalog," a symbol of the dreams and hopes they once shared.
