Jeff Sneider, editor at The Wrap, has just dropped what appears to be the biggest bombshell regarding the Spider-Man solo film to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, indicating that both Sony and Marvel themselves intend to take a very… bold direction!
During the Meet the Movie Press podcast, which Sneider co-hosts with Mark Reilly of Schmoes Know, the host revealed: “This isn’t totally set in stone, but I’m telling you now: Spider-Man will not be white .” When Reilly asked if that was speculation, he said: “I’m 95% sure.”
But if he won't be white, what will his ethnicity be then? Sneider added: "Probably black. But there's a chance he'll be Latino. 95% certain he won't be white."
Based on this, two possibilities are most speculated: Either Marvel/Sony will try to bring Miles Morales, the second Spider-Man from the Ultimate Universe, or Miguel O'Hara, the Spider-Man of 2099. According to Sneider, the certainty may stem from a decision provoked by hate emails sent to Marvel:
“I don’t think it will be Peter Parker. I strongly feel – Sony has the opportunity to slap DC and Marvel in the face by bringing out a top-tier Black hero. As I said last week, there were leaked emails that had a strong racist undertone. I think that helped decide things.”
