Editor Jeff Sneider of the website The Wrap has just released what appears to be the biggest bombshell regarding Spider-Man's solo film to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which indicates that both Sony and Marvel themselves intend to take a very… bold direction!
During the Meet the Movie Press podcast, which Sneider co-hosts alongside Schmoes Know's Mark Reilly, the host revealed, "It's not quite set in stone, but I'm telling you now: Spider-Man won't be white . When Reilly asked if this was speculation, he said, “I’m 95% sure.”
But if he won't be white, what will his ethnicity be then? Sneider added: “Probably black. But there's a chance he's Latino. 95% sure he won’t be white.”
Based on this, two possibilities are the most speculated: Either Marvel/Sony will try to bring Miles Morales, the second Spider-Man of the Ultimate Universe, or Miguel O'Hara, the Spider-Man of 2099. According to Sneider, the cause of certainty may come from a decision prompted by hate emails sent to Marvel:
“I don't think it will be Peter Parker. I feel strongly – Sony has the opportunity to get in the face of DC and Marvel by bringing a black, high-ranking hero. As I said last week, there were emails that were leaked and that had a strong racist slant. I think that helped decide things.”
