It was in the early hours of that morning that the nerd world was shocked, as a statement released on Tuesday night officially confirmed Spider-Man's inclusion in the Marvel cinematic universe.
The agreement is that the character will appear in a Marvel Studios film, and then Sony Pictures will release a new film featuring the hero on July 28, 2017, which will be co-produced by Kevin Feige (of Marvel Studios) and Amy Pascal (of Sony). The idea is to take the hero in another "creative direction" on screen. Sony will continue to own the rights to Spider-Man (whose franchise is estimated to be worth US$4 billion), as well as finance, distribute, and have the final say on any film featuring the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Currently, there is no official information on whether Andrew Garfield will remain in the role (most speculate that he will not), but Deadline claims that Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, the franchise's former producers, will continue to be involved in the hero's films and should be announced soon as executive producers.
The statement doesn't specify in which Marvel film Spider-Man will make his debut, but Marvel Studios has announced new release dates for its films through 2019: Thor: Ragnarok (November 3, 2017), Black Panther (July 6, 2018), Captain Marvel (November 2, 2018), and Inhumans (July 12, 2019). The Wall Street Journal, however, says that Spider-Man is expected to appear in Captain America: Civil War, as previously speculated.
