The anime To Be Hero X had already made it clear that the life of a hero isn't easy. Especially in episode 2, titled "Xiao Yueqing," where the character gave up being a hero because she couldn't stand not being in control of her own life. In episode 3 , released on April 19, another hero is introduced. This time, Em Arste shows that the problem may be even worse than we imagined.

In the episode, Nice's manager wants him to climb the hero rankings, so she asks him to find Loba, the archenemy of Em Riste, the hero ranked 10th. Before gaining people's trust and gaining power, Em Riste was a firefighter. He saved a little girl's life in a fire, earning him admiration, trust, and, later, a statue in his honor.
Nice's manager wants the hero to take Em Riste's place, so she asks him to stop Loba. She also makes it clear that only one can reach position X, the highest position. Therefore, there is a race among the heroes themselves to achieve this goal, a fact that becomes clear when an unknown hero nearly attacks Nice while he is searching for the villain.
In To Be Hero X the audience's wish is my command
In episode 2, Xiao Yueqing confesses that her teleportation power only works for places where Nice is. This is because the audience wants them to be together. The same goes for Em Riste, whose confidence is based on the audience's desire for him to stay strong.
As a result, the hero endures several uncomfortable situations in his daily life. Besides being unable to lie down to sleep, as he must always stand, Em Riste cannot bend over. Therefore, people see him as a strong figure and a pillar of humanity.
The end of the episode brings an interesting twist
While examining the Loba's hideout, Nice realizes she's trapped in a trap, where several bombs will soon be detonated. The explosion site is strategic, below Heroes' Square, where the Em Riste statue stands.
After investigating the scene, Nice discovers something surprising. The Wolf doesn't actually hate Em Riste; she hates the image he portrays. The villain is the girl the hero saved from the fire, consumed by resentment after witnessing the way the firefighter was perceived by the public. Her only wish was for Em Riste to return to his former self.
With that, the 10th hero gives up his position and returns to being an ordinary person. Meanwhile, Nice, after saving Em Riste and a little girl from being crushed by the statue in the square, moves up to 10th place in the hero rankings. Although she sometimes welcomes assuming Nice's identity, it's clear that Lin Ling is still reflecting deeply on her decision and seems to disagree with the burden some heroes carry.
The final scene reveals that Enlightenment, a former hero, appears to have kidnapped Xiao Yueqing to threaten Nice. The villain will likely gain more prominence in the next episode, and the hero will do everything he can to rescue the girl who still lingers in his heart.
Episode 3 begins to bring depth to the work
So far, episode 3's story was the anime's best. It brought a little more depth to the heavy burden the heroes carry, especially in a world where public opinion defines who you are.
The anime is still in its early stages, so there's much more to explore. Besides Nice, there are nine other heroes in the top ten who will likely be introduced soon. Until then, we don't know if the image and confidence they convey are truly genuine.
Furthermore, the animation, by BeDream, blends 2D and 3D at specific moments, making it bold, beautiful, and engaging. With the combination of an unusual script and delightful animation, To Be Hero X is one of the best anime of the season.
