Episode Analysis

In episode 8 of To Be Hero X, released on May 24th, the anime introduces the story of Lucky Cyan, a heroine who holds the 7th position in the hero ranking. The episode aims to present the character Cyan in more depth. Although she made a brief appearance in the E-Soul arc, her story had not yet been explored by the series. The narrative follows the character's childhood and highlights her discomfort at having luck on her shoulders.

The episode explains that a large jet crashed in a populated area. When a journalist tries to infiltrate the wreckage to capture some images for his story, he finds Cyan, the sole survivor of the plane crash. They then take the little girl to an orphanage, where she remains for several years.

To Be Hero X brings Lucky Cyan's childhood

During the years she lived in the orphanage, everyone around Lucky Cyan wore her. People saw her as a good luck charm, and gradually she became a symbol of the orphanage. When people wanted their wishes to come true, they would go to Cyan and ask for advice. However, the girl wanted a normal childhood, one where she could play freely with children her own age.

From childhood, Cyan displays a high level of confidence. However, at a certain point in the narrative, she confesses that she doesn't know why she receives so many points of confidence, nor does she understand the reason for her high luck. Despite the girl's sadness at not living a normal life, the orphanage owner continues to use her as a symbol of good luck to fulfill people's wishes. Therefore, Lucky Cyan begins to perform and sing as a way to please the people who are waiting for her luck.

After several years living without friends in the orphanage, Lucky Cyan meets a boy nicknamed "Calamity," because there's a rumor that he brings bad luck wherever he goes. However, the two become close and, little by little, build a friendship.

Lucky Cyan decides to follow his own path

During Lucky Cyan's performance for the audience visiting her at the orphanage, the character decides to try something different. She swaps the melodious song that people were used to for something more upbeat, a style of music similar to the show presented in the E-Soul arc.

However, the new performance is not very well received by the public, much less by the orphanage owner. Thus, Lucky Cyan and Calamity try to escape. The orphanage owner blocks the exit and, obsessed with helping people, prevents the girl from leaving. He even shows that he is ready to use his powers to stop the escape. The man, who at first seemed like a good person and was against the exploitation of Lucky Cyan, ended up being corrupted by the desire to be seen as a hero.

The episode ends mysteriously. We don't know if the orphanage owner will be one of the main villains, or if he'll have a quick resolution in the next episode. Unlike the other chapters, Lucky Cyan's introduction was calm. Without fights or much action, the anime chose to focus more on the story and explain the character's past.

What can we expect from the next episodes?

The anime director confirmed that, starting with the Cyan arc, the series' heroes will be animated in 2D. Therefore, in episode 8, the animation style changes. For those who haven't watched it yet because they don't like 3D animation, this could be their chance to discover To Be HeroX.

To date, the connection between Lucky Cyan and Yang Cheng's stories has not been confirmed. However, it is likely that, like Lin Ling's arc, there is something in common. Furthermore, the hero Queen, who holds the 2nd position in the ranking, also appears in the episode. However, at the time the narrative takes place, she is not yet a known hero. In the episode, it is revealed that she is the daughter of the journalist who found Lucky Cyan.

Lucky Cyan's story is told in just three episodes. The next arc, which contains two episodes, will be about the Queen. The anime is available on the streaming platform Crunchyroll, dubbed in Portuguese.
