Wuchang: Fallen Feathers arrived with a bold proposal, blending the dark style of Soulslikes with a setting rich in Chinese mythology. For beginners, the experience can be brutal, especially if you ignore essential aspects of the game.

This guide brings together key tips to ensure a smoother, more strategic journey from the very first steps.

Understanding the mechanics right from the start avoids frustrations

Unlike conventional RPGs, Wuchang relies on blind exploration and tactical decisions from the very first minutes. Without a map, extensive tutorials, or obvious markings, the game challenges the player to pay attention to every detail. Therefore, gathering practical information about attributes, weapons, combat, and items early on can avoid unnecessary deaths and rework.

The characters scattered throughout the map aren't there by chance. In Wuchang, NPCs serve as primary sources of information. They can provide important items, unlock side quests, and even point out alternative paths. Ignoring dialogue can be costly, as the game offers no objective markers. Reading each line carefully and revisiting quest items in your inventory will give you an advantage.

Focus on attributes and choose your weapons wisely.

The game's evolution system requires strategy. Players use a resource called Red Mercury to level up and unlock attributes through a skill tree. Before delving deeper, it's essential to experiment with all available weapons and choose your primary weapon. Since points are limited, players compromise their progress by focusing on too many styles at once. Furthermore, it's possible to combine two weapons during combat, adding even more tactical depth.

Accumulating large amounts of Red Mercury may seem like a good idea, but it's risky. Whenever a character dies, they lose the resource and only regain it if they return to the place of death without dying again. Therefore, it's best to use the resource to level up as soon as possible. Save Mercury feathers to maintain a safe reserve, as you won't lose them even if you die.

Unlock and learn to parry

One of the most powerful early-game abilities is the parry. Players unlock the parry by advancing their longsword tree with the "Sword Counter" skill. This technique allows them to interrupt enemy attacks and leave them vulnerable. The game's default dodge is slow and limited, so mastering the parry can be the difference between success and frustration in early bosses.

The Madness system adds a strategic layer to gameplay. Killing human enemies increases the Madness level, while killing feathered creatures reduces it. If the character dies with the bar full, a demon will be summoned at the place of death, making it difficult to recover lost Mercury. Furthermore, with increased Madness, damage dealt and received increases. Knowing how to manage this aspect can save precious resources.

Increase your healing vials

Healing vials, called Mana Vials in the game, can be upgraded by finding Forgotten Memories and Lost Remnants. These items increase the number of vials and the healing power, respectively. They are hidden in golden chests, usually in secret areas. After collecting them, you must go to an altar and apply the upgrades to the Celestial Calling tree to secure the benefits.

Combat mechanics in Wuchang involve more than simple strikes. The Glimmer is a perfect dodge that, if used at the right time, charges Heavenly Power. This magical energy is essential for using spells and special weapon abilities. Performing Glimmer frequently increases skill damage and can alter combos. Additionally, learning to break enemy posture with heavy attacks and attacks from behind can ensure quick and lethal executions.

Bless your weapons to gain extra benefits

In the blessing system, players can apply three different types of weapon enhancements: Oath, Wisdom, and Memory. These blessings are found in boss loot or special chests and grant everything from attribute boosts to additional combat effects. To apply them, simply access the "Blessing" option on any altar. Crafting a weapon with the right combination of blessings can transform the dynamics of a difficult fight.

During exploration, small creatures known as Bamboo Shoots will flee upon sighting the player. Killing them grants special items that can be traded with an exclusive merchant, the Panda, for unique rewards. If the shoot flees, simply rest at an altar and return to the same spot. These items are scarce, so make the most of every encounter.

Read item descriptions and build your strategic inventory.

Healing, resistance, and buff items are scattered throughout the map and make a real difference in exploration. Items like the Bunny Bun and the Pill of Immutable Origin help restore health or increase resistance to negative effects. Knowing each item's effects and using them at the right times can prevent unnecessary deaths and optimize progression.

Choose the right armor for each challenge

Armor in Wuchang offers different resistances to each type of damage. Before entering a boss fight, analyze the enemy's attack type and equip the most appropriate armor. A well-balanced defense against negative status effects, for example, can decide the outcome of a fight. Changing armor according to the situation should be part of the player's strategy.
