The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have just taken the top spot on the list of the highest-rated games of 2025. Both were re-released on the new Nintendo Switch 2 , and even though they are ports from the previous generation, they surpassed the new titles released this year.

Currently, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom leads with 95 points on Metacritic, followed by Breath of the Wild, which scored 94 on the Switch 2 (in addition to its original 97 on the first Switch). Therefore, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 lost the overall crown, but remains the highest-rated new game of 2025, with a score of 93.

Split Fiction
Game: Split Fiction

With the arrival of these two Nintendo giants, the games Blue Prince (score 92) and Split Fiction (score 91) fell to fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Although the ports received few improvements, their original quality remains undeniable, which justifies the high ratings.

However, this competition shows how rare it is for a new game to achieve scores above 94. Even promising titles like Death Stranding 2, Donkey Kong Bonanza, Borderlands 4 , and Ninja Gaiden 4 have not yet demonstrated the potential to surpass that mark.

Could Metroid Prime 4 be the next big thing?

If there's a safe bet to enter this select group, it's Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive game could surprise, considering the franchise's history of positive reviews. After all, expectations surrounding the title are sky-high.
