Studio Ghibli Veteran Debates Preference for Kawaii Girls Over a Good Story

Former Studio Ghibli Toshio Suzuki recently participated in an interview with screenwriter Gen Urobuchi and filmmaker Mamoru Oshii to discuss the change in the anime industry in recent years. In the meantime, they point out that current anime focus more on the characters than the story.

Check it out:

While the three were talking, Oshii comments that current anime don't focus on story development because they give preference to characters. Urobuchi then agreed to the idea, claiming that the characters are more important to production companies now. However, Suzuki brought a different, more nuanced point of view to the conversation. He used Madoka Magica as an example of a good story along with an engaging character.

We can link your comments to kawaii girls who tend to be the most popular characters in Japanese circles. These types of characters bring a very strong appeal for fans to consume anime, manga and various Japanese products. However, this tendency to prioritize characters over a good story is divided into several factors.

Probably most current fans are more engaged watching their favorite character overcome challenges rather than focusing on the overall narrative. Therefore, some experienced critics think that the industry has lost its way in this current trend. On the other hand, just like Suzuki, there are people who still believe that it is possible to deliver the best of both methods.

As for you, what is your point of view? Do you think current anime focus more on successful characters or a good story? Finally, leave your comment below!
