Borderlands 4 will no longer be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in October. Gearbox Software announced the indefinite postponement of the title and confirmed that all digital pre-orders have been canceled by Nintendo.

According to the developer, the decision was made to ensure a more stable and polished open-world experience, as well as to align the launch with the future inclusion of cross-saves, a feature eagerly awaited by fans.

Reasons for the delay of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2

Gearbox stated that the delay was not a decision made lightly. The studio emphasized that it needs more time to deliver a version of the game with the quality that players expect on Nintendo's new hybrid console. Furthermore, the team highlighted its desire to launch Borderlands 4 with cross-save support, a feature that will allow for greater freedom between platforms.

With the change in plans, all digital pre-orders were automatically canceled, in compliance with Nintendo's policies. Players who had pre-ordered should receive a refund by September 26th. The measure caused frustration in part of the community, but the studio assured that it will provide new information soon about the future of the title on the Switch 2.

Performance on other platforms

Although Gearbox didn't detail technical issues in the announcement, Borderlands 4 faces criticism on other platforms. On PC, the game requires high-end hardware to maintain stable performance, while on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S performance tends to drop during prolonged sessions. This instability raises questions about the adaptation for the Nintendo Switch 2, which will likely require even greater adjustments to balance graphics and frame rate.

What to expect from here on out

Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox, maintains that Borderlands 4 is optimized, but admits that performance updates are already in development. The expectation is that the Switch 2 version will only be released once these adjustments are implemented. Until then, fans will have to wait for further official announcements, with no concrete release date yet.
