Borderlands 4 's PC release was met with great anticipation, but Steam Deck users should exercise caution before investing in the game. This is because the Gearbox title is experiencing serious performance issues on Valve's handheld console.

On the Steam page, the game appears with an "Unknown" status in relation to the Steam Deck, indicating that it has not yet undergone official testing by Valve. However, players have already evaluated its performance, and the results are not encouraging.

Steam Deck Borderlands 4

According to the Steam Deck HQ website , even the minimum requirements for Borderlands 4 are quite demanding, which already puts the handheld at a disadvantage. In practice, the game doesn't run stably, reaching only 22 FPS in initial areas, with drastic drops to single digits during loading times.

Compromised gameplay

Steam Deck

Even with the graphics settings at their lowest, performance remains inconsistent. Furthermore, the use of features like frame generation should be avoided, as it causes freezes, lag, and more stuttering. In other words, although the game is "playable" from beginning to end, the experience is far from enjoyable.

Uncertain future for laptops

To date, Gearbox has not revealed any plans for specific optimizations to the Steam Deck. Future updates may improve performance, but it's difficult to imagine the handheld being able to handle the game's demanding requirements well.

Meanwhile, other recent releases have arrived with the Steam Deck Verified, guaranteeing an optimized experience.
