Crunchyroll has announced that it has launched an investigation following reports of a potential data breach involving its ticketing system. The company stated that it is working with cybersecurity experts to analyze the case and understand the extent of the problem.

According to information released by the International Cyber Digest, the incident may have exposed approximately 100 GB of customer data. The information cited included IP addresses, emails, and even financial data, allegedly obtained through malware on a third-party system.

Possible failure in outsourced system

According to the report, the attack allegedly occurred on March 12th and was linked to a partner responsible for the ticketing system, operated by the company Telus in India. To date, Crunchyroll has not confirmed technical details or the complete veracity of the allegations.

The company only stated that it is aware of the allegations and is continuing its investigation with independent experts. Further updates will be released as the analysis progresses.

Recent history and legal issues

Furthermore, the platform has already faced recent challenges related to digital privacy. A class-action lawsuit accuses the company of sharing user data with the marketing company Braze Inc., which may violate data protection laws.

Previously, Crunchyroll also settled a similar lawsuit in 2023 involving the use of the Facebook Pixel. At the time, the company agreed to pay $16 million and adjust its tracking practices.

Finally, Crunchyroll is part of the Sony group, in a partnership between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Aniplex. Keep following more anime on AnimeNews.
