In the second season of the anime Dandadan, we finally learn about the tragic past of one of the series' most enigmatic yokai: the dreaded Evil Eye. Although the focus is on the duo of protagonists, it's undeniable that supernatural creatures like him enrich the universe created by Yukinobu Tatsu.

Previously, the mystery surrounding the entity generated various theories among fans. However, episode 2 clarifies everything by revealing the cruel secret of Jiji village — an ancient ritual that forever changes Jin Enjoji.
The boy who turned into a spirit out of sheer cruelty

Decades ago, the peaceful village of Byakuja hid a terrible pact. Fearing an eruption of the local volcano, the villagers began sacrificing children to the Tsuchinoko worm. One boy, imprisoned for months in a dark room, dreamed only of playing with other children. However, he ended up being brutally killed in the ritual.
Despite this, its spirit returned as a yokai without resentment. Like other lost souls, it tried to interact with new families, but its frightening appearance only caused panic. Meanwhile, the adults suffered from suicidal psychic waves emanating from the creature in the volcano.
The Kito family created the real monster in Dandadan

Eventually, the Kito used the confusion to kidnap more children. When the yokai tried to save a boy of the same age as himself as he was dying, he failed miserably. This failure consumed him. Thus, the vengeful Evil Eye was born.
Currently, Jin Enjoji has become the ideal vessel for him to walk in the real world once more. Endowed with absurd strength, the new yokai promises to be an immense challenge.
Opinion on the events: Evil Eye is a powerful metaphor about childhood abandonment and unresolved trauma. Dandadan manages to deliver terror with sensitivity—and that sets it apart from other shounen of its generation.
