In an interview with The New York Times , Oda is asked about the failure that live-action anime often have. The reporter then uses the adaptations of Ghost in the Shell (2017) and Cowboy Bebop (2021) as examples of failure, and asks the mangaka if One Piece wouldn't suffer the same. However, Oda stated that the live-action adaptation of his manga had an excellent adaptation.

Several manga have been adapted into live-action, but there's been a history of failure; no one in Japan could cite a single successful example. Would One Piece fans—and viewers unfamiliar with the manga—accept it? Perhaps it was time to look for the answer. Fortunately, Netflix agreed not to release the show until I agreed it was satisfactory. I read the scripts, took notes, and acted as a watchdog to ensure the material was being adapted correctly.

Synopsis:

The story revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who gained a rubber body after eating the magical Gomu Gomu no Mi (the Rubber Fruit). Inspired by his childhood idol, the powerful pirate Red-Haired Shanks, Luffy decided to become a pirate and set sail across the sea to find the mythical treasure, the One Piece, and proclaim himself the Pirate King.
