In an interview with The New York Times , Oda is asked about the failure that live-action anime often have. So the reporter uses the adaptations of Ghost in the Shell (2017) and Cowboy Bebop (2021) as examples of failure, and asks the mangaka if One Piece wouldn't suffer the same. However, Oda stated that the live-action of his manga had an excellent adaptation.
“Several manga were turned into live action, but there was a history of failure; no one in Japan could cite an example of success. Would “One Piece” fans — and viewers who don’t know the manga — accept it? Maybe it was time to look for the answer. Fortunately, Netflix agreed that they would not release the show until I agreed that it was satisfactory. I read the scripts, took notes and acted as a watchdog to ensure the material was being adapted correctly.”
Synopsis:
The story revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who gained a body made of rubber after eating the magical fruit Gomu Gomu no Mi (the Rubber Fruit). Since he was inspired by his childhood idol, the powerful pirate Shanks the Red, Luffy decided to become a pirate and sail on a journey across the sea to find the mythical treasure, the One Piece, and proclaim himself the Pirate King.
