Yoshiyuki Tomino, the legendary creator of Mobile Suit Gundam, will participate in a real-life event about the future of space exploration. When he launched the franchise in the late 1970s, he certainly didn't imagine that his work would become a global icon, spanning decades, spawning new series, and generating a myriad of products.

Currently, Tomino has been invited to give a special lecture on July 8th in Japan, during the “Space Business Conference 2025,” organized by the Spacetide Foundation. The panel proposes a thought-provoking reflection: will it be possible to build an “ideal space society,” or will humanity repeat the mistakes made by the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon?

Reflections on science fiction and reality

As announced by the organization, Tomino will discuss how to advance into space without compromising Earth's survival. Furthermore, he will reflect on how close we are to the futuristic vision he presented almost fifty years ago. Inevitably, the panel will also address the current rapid advancement in the commercialization of space.

According to the statement, this will be a unique opportunity to connect science fiction with current reality. After all, Gundam remains one of Japan's greatest science fiction works, offering warnings and hopes about humanity's future in space.

Since 2015, Spacetide has been hosting pioneering conferences in Japan, even before the term "commercial space" became popular in the country. Surprisingly, these initiatives have boosted the private space industry, which now attracts billions of dollars in global investment.

However, while the progress is remarkable, Spacetide states that space exploration has not yet unlocked its full potential. Therefore, this year's event, which marks the conference's 10th anniversary, carries the motto: "The next decade: unlocking space for all of humanity".

The return of the Gundam anime in 2025

Meanwhile, in the fictional universe of Gundam, the narrative took a new turn with Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Directed by Hideaki Anno (Evangelion), the plot proposes an alternate reality in which Char Aznable and his allies win the war against the Earth Federation, radically altering the fate of the Universal Century.

However, this new approach powerfully recalls one of the franchise's greatest conflicts, which many still consider one of the best wars in anime history.
