Bandai Namco Filmworks revealed a new chapter for the Gundam franchise during San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Titled Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO , the anime will premiere in 2027 and will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama , known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Eden of the East . Production will take place at Sola Animation studio .

In addition to directing, Kamiyama also wrote the scripts for the series. However, the project is part of the RG Project, an initiative that presents a completely new universe for Gundam, separate from the Universal Century chronology. According to the director, the goal was to create a new identity for the franchise.
A new universe for Gundam
The story follows a future in which a mysterious interstellar object grants humanity three revolutionary technological advancements. However, a few years later, this same entity unleashes a hostile ecosystem known as Apocalypse. After abandoning Earth, humanity begins to live on the Moon and in space colonies. In this scenario emerges Ray Azumi, a young Gundam Zero pilot and war orphan.
The cast includes Takeo Otsuka as Ray Azumi. The science fiction concept was developed in collaboration with Toh Enjoe, while Eiichi Shimizu was responsible for the design of the mobile suits. Go Shiina composed the soundtrack.
Finally, in parallel with the Gundam RG XARX-ZERO anime, the RG Project will also include the Gundam Rogue Orbit, set 90 years after the events of the series.
