How Do You Live? , the new animation from Studio Ghibli , debuted today in Japanese cinemas, marking the end of an era for the company and one of its biggest collaborators. Hayao Miyazaki , the renowned Japanese animation director, has declared that this will be his last film and is very confident with the quality of his work.

Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most respected and influential animators as he is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli. Additionally, he was also the director of Spirited Away , Princess Mononoke, and The Animated Castle . So the last film he produced is a huge milestone for his career and his fans.

The team of animators and producers worked with Miyazaki in developing How Do You Live? since 2016. However, the film did not receive a trailer and no details about its plot or visuals were revealed before release. The only thing Studio Ghibli released was a poster.

According to Toshio Suzuki , the studio president, the decision to keep film information secret was purposeful. He says in an interview that Miyazaki wanted to keep details of the film under wraps to generate suspense.

“I've been making films since then, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and that poster is the first thing Miyazaki Hayao really praised me for. He said, 'Suzuki-san, this is amazing.'
He said it was the best thing I've ever done. This served as a tip. 'So let's do it!' No trailers. Absolutely no TV commercials. We will do everything. No newspaper ads!”

Synopsis:

How Do You Live? was inspired by the book by Genzaburo Yoshino , released in 1937. The book's story follows the journey of Copper, a 15-year-old boy who goes on a great journey to discover the meaning of life. However, Miyazaki stated that his film will have a different story.
