Anyone who has watched live-action adaptations of anime and manga knows that American attempts at this type of adaptation haven't been successful. However, Iñaki Godoy, the actor who plays Luffy, says he believes in the potential of the One Piece because everyone involved in the project is passionate about Eiichiro Oda. Therefore, if he's right, perhaps this series won't fall victim to the "curse" of anime live-action adaptations.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Iñaki Godoy is asked how he can present his series to the public, knowing the bad reputation of live-action anime adaptations. The actor then emphasizes that the Netflix wants to honor the One Piece name for the fans and especially for Eiichiro Oda.

"Well, the show is made by people who love One Piece. We love the manga, we love the anime, we think they're great. And the only thing we want to do is honor that and attract more people to it. We don't want to do anything more than honor Mr. Oda's work and get more people to like it too, because it's such a powerful story. And the whole world should know that.".

I mean, a lot of people already know about One Piece. But I want your grandfather to know what One Piece is. I want your grandmother – I want everyone to know what One Piece is. And for those who are already fans, to be able to relive those iconic moments. And you know, there's something really special about seeing your favorite characters as real people too. There's a special kind of magic in that.”

Synopsis:

The story revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who gained a body made of rubber after eating the magical Gomu Gomu no Mi (Rubber Fruit). He was inspired by his childhood idol, the powerful pirate Shanks the Red-Haired, to become a pirate and sail on a journey across the sea to find the mythical treasure, the One Piece, and proclaim himself the King of the Pirates.
