And now for some sad news from Japan. The Japan International Content Distribution Association (CODA) released a report this week citing losses of between 1.9 and 2.2 trillion yen (US$14.2 to 16.5 billion) in 2021 due to piracy in Japanese entertainment, including manga, anime , music, and video games. According to reports, this figure marks a fivefold increase compared to the association's previous study in 2019.

Japan – Piracy has affected Japanese entertainment by billions

Check it out:

The organization calculated that anime and other video content from Japan suffered losses of 906.5 billion to 1.4 trillion yen (approximately US$6.8 to US$10.5 billion) due to piracy, while manga and other published media lost between 395.2 billion and 831.1 billion yen (approximately US$3 to US$6.2 billion).

Furthermore, CODA attributed the increase in piracy to people spending more time indoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the proliferation of streaming services. Therefore, the Nikkei Asia newspaper stated that this number exceeds the value of the entire licensed content market, which is estimated at 600 billion yen (approximately US$5.19 billion) annually.
