Kadokawa Publishing is expanding its horizons to revitalize the Japanese publishing market. Recently, the company held an English-language Light Novel Contest to discover new global talent. Although Japan has many writers, the number of domestic readers is declining. The strategy aims to attract an international audience and revitalize the genre with fresh perspectives.

The decline in readership in Japan

Satoshi Arima, editor-in-chief of MF Books, states that there is no shortage of authors in the country. However, the market needs a positive "frenzy" to avoid stagnation. Meanwhile, the publisher believes that works by foreign authors published in Japan can stimulate local interest. Therefore, the inclusion of stories like Isekai'd with my dog, winner of the grand prize, serves as fuel for this new wave.

Global expansion and new business

In addition to literature, the initiative encompasses the World Manga Contest. According to Kadokawa's leadership, this openness facilitates future business partnerships outside of Japan. Thus, the success of a foreign author in Japan opens doors for the publisher to dominate new markets. On the other hand, the priority remains finding hits that capture the attention of readers and investors globally.
