The story revolves around Mitsuha and Taki, both high school students. She lives in a rural town nestled in the mountains, while Taki, also a student, lives in central Tokyo, spending part of his time with friends and working at an Italian restaurant. After a mysterious event, they temporarily switch bodies.

The manga was adapted into an animated film directed by Makoto Shinkai, animated by CoMix Wave Films , and distributed by Toho. Character designs were created by Masayoshi Tanaka. It premiered in Japan on August 26, 2016, grossing an impressive $281 million.
