The incident occurred in 2019 and gained worldwide attention. Shinji Aoba admitted to starting the fire and said he regretted the crime. At the time, Shinji participated in a KyoAni novel contest and was rejected in the first round of selection. Eight months before the fire, a random scene from the anime Tsurune aired, which Aoba accused the studio of stealing his idea for, this being the motivation for his actions. The studio denied the plagiarism.
Therefore, the scene itself was of the characters buying discounted meat in episode 5.
The lawyers tried to reduce Shinji's sentence or acquit him, arguing that he was not psychologically sound on the day he committed the crime, but their attempts were in vain.
