During the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026 , the Singapore -based animation studio Kasagi Labo revealed a new project linked to the work created by Yoshiaki Kawajiri . According to information released by Cartoon Brew , the production is being treated as a film.

The announcement also brought a big name to the table for fans of Japanese animation. Masao Maruyama, co-founder of Madhouse and MAPPA, and producer of the original 1993 film, will participate in the project as a special creative consultant. Details regarding the plot, cast, or release date have not yet been revealed.
A cult classic from the 90s
The story follows Jubei Kibagami, a wandering swordsman who becomes involved in a conspiracy involving demonic ninjas after saving a young female warrior. The work gained international popularity, especially in the United States, thanks to its broadcasts on cable television.

In recent years, the franchise has returned to the spotlight with a 4K restoration overseen by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Furthermore, the film has received special screenings at international festivals, and a new 4K Blu-ray is planned for 2027.
