The anime Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004 had its second season confirmed during the AnimeJapan 2026 event. The production also secured global distribution, with streaming on Crunchyroll, expanding the international reach of the work.

In addition, the team announced a new game project titled Sentenced to Be a Hero -Game of the GODDESS-. The title received a teaser video and promises to expand the universe of the series, bringing new narrative elements and further exploring the central concept of the story.

The anime premiered on January 3, 2026, with a special 60-minute episode airing on Tokyo MX. The series is based on the light novel written by Rocket Shokai, published by Kadokawa since 2021. The narrative follows convicted criminals forced to fight as heroes against demonic forces.

Franchise expansion with manga and novels

The work began as a web novel in 2020 on the Kakuyomu website, before being published in print. Currently, it has eight published volumes. The manga, illustrated by Natsumi Inoue, began in 2022 on the Dengeki Comic Regulus.

The story presents a world where heroism serves as punishment for criminals. These convicts face constant battles, being revived after death. The plot takes a new turn when the protagonist forms a contract with a goddess.
