Ashborn: The First Shadow Monarch
Among the power-hungry Monarchs, none compare to Ashborn, the Shadow Monarch. Although anime fans haven't yet seen this character in action, those who have read the manhwa already know his true magnitude. Considered the strongest among the Monarchs, his story goes far beyond his impressive abilities.
From loyalty to rebirth in Solo Leveling
Initially, Ashborn was not a Monarch, but rather one of the Rulers who faced the Monarchs in an endless war. The battle was commanded by a supreme entity called the Absolute Being, who saw the conflict as mere entertainment. When the Rulers realized they were being manipulated, they rebelled against their creator.
Ashborn, however, remained loyal to the Absolute Being and was defeated by his former allies. In his final moments, he discovered that the Absolute Being had granted him monstrous power as a reward for his loyalty. Thus, he was reborn as the Shadow Monarch and vowed to continue the fight, but it was too late: the Absolute Being had been killed, and the war had taken a new turn.
Legacy and choosing a successor
With his superior skills, Ashborn quickly became feared by both Rulers and Monarchs. However, internal betrayals led him to abandon the war, leaving the Monarchs vulnerable. Later, he decided to find a worthy successor and descended to the human world.
To that end, he made a pact with Kandiaru, a mage who created "The System," a mechanism designed to find the ideal human to inherit the power of the Shadow Monarch. That human was Sung Jinwoo, who proved strong enough to bear such a responsibility.
In the War of the Monarchs arc, Ashborn recognized Jinwoo's potential and granted him his Black Heart, sealing his succession. Jinwoo himself had an encounter with Ashborn in a vision, where he finally understood the true nature of his power.
The future of the shadow monarch
While the rulers sent Sung Il-Hwan to kill Jinwoo, believing Ashborn was still against them, the new Shadow Monarch's victory over his enemies proved his intention to protect humanity. Thus, Jinwoo followed Ashborn's legacy and destroyed the Monarchs who threatened the weak.
Ashborn may be gone, but his impact echoes throughout the history of Solo Leveling. With Jinwoo now carrying his legacy, the fate of the world will never be the same again.
