The July issue of Kodansha magazine revealed a promotional image and trailer for the anime of Kyo Shirodaira and Chasiba Katase's manga In/Spectre (Kyokou Suiri or Invented Interface), along with its premiere date in January 2020. The anime's official website also began streaming a promotional video and revealed that the anime will have its world premiere at Anime Expo on July 5th.

Co-produced by Crunchyroll, the animation is by Brains Base studio, directed by Keiji Gotoh (Kiddy Grade, Endride, Sengoku Collection), with story by Noboru Takagi (Durarara!!, Golden Kamuy, Kuroko's Basketball) and character design by Takatoshi Honda (RIN-NE concept).
The anime's world premiere will take place at Anime Expo on July 5th at 4 PM. Voice actor Mamoru Miyano, who makes his anime debut, will be appearing at the event.
Additionally, the anime's staff revealed that Uso to Chamaeleon will write and perform the series' opening theme song.
Akari Kito and Mamoru Miyano will star in the anime as Kotoko Iwanaga and Kuro Sakuragawa, respectively.

The official website describes the supernatural mystery novel as follows:
When she was just a girl, Kotoko was kidnapped by a yokai. These spirits made her a powerful intermediary between the spirit world and the human world, but this power came at a price: an eye and a leg. Now, years later, she watches over dangerous yokai while developing feelings for a young man named Kuro, who is also special: an incident with a yokai gave him healing powers. He is surprised when Kotoko asks him to join her in dealing with the rogue yokai, preserving the thin line between reality and the supernatural.
Katase launched the manga based on a 2011 novel by Shirodaira (Spiral, The Record of a Fallen Vampire, Blast of Tempest) in Kodansha's Shōnen Magazine R in April 2015. The manga is Katase's first serialized work. It was nominated for Best Shōnen Manga at the 42nd Annual Kodansha Manga Awards in 2018. Kodansha published the manga's 10th compiled book volume in Japan on April 17.
