Kadokawa confirmed on Friday the anime adaptation of The Eccentric Doctor of the Moon Flower Kingdom (Gekkakoku Kiiden), a manga by Tōru Himuka published since 2018 in Asuka magazine. The work mixes imperial medical fantasy with elements inspired by Chinese culture and already has 15 volumes released in Japan.

Therefore, the production will be overseen by Koichiro Kuroda at Studio Elle. Aki Mizuki will be responsible for the scripts, while Akira Ono will handle the character designs. Shiho Terada , known for her work on series from the Precure franchise, will compose the soundtrack.

The main cast has also been revealed. Rina Hidaka will play Koyō, Takeo Ōtsuka will voice Prince Keiun, Taito Ban will be Shingdam, and Shōya Chiba will play Shiei. To celebrate the announcement, Tōru Himuka released a new illustration of the protagonists.

Medical fantasy in an imperial setting

The story follows Koyō, a young doctor who surprises Crown Prince Keiun after performing a complex surgery during a regional inspection. From then on, they both become involved in political conspiracies, ancient beliefs, and internal conflicts within the Moon Flower kingdom.

The manga has been winning over readers precisely because of its combination of medicine, political drama, and historical fantasy. Furthermore, the publisher Seven Seas publishes the work in English, expanding the series' international reach before the anime's premiere.
