The Magic: The Gathering universe will undergo significant changes in November. The card Vivi Ornitier , from the Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy set , is expected to leave the Standard format as it is considered too strong by players and developers.

According to senior designer Carmen Klomparensof Wizards of the Coast, the company has moved up the next announcement of banned cards from November 24th to November 10th, 2025. While she didn't directly confirm it, she made it clear that Vivi Ornitier is "distorting the Standard format" and needs to go.

Meanwhile, other controversial cards, such as Agatha's Soul Cauldron, seem safe for now, allowing versions of the Izzet Cauldron to remain viable. Therefore, the ban doesn't mean all related archetypes will be eliminated.

A scenario of imbalance

The biggest problem lies with the combination known as Vivi Cauldron, which has dominated tournaments and even casual matches. However, Klomparens pointed out that there is still room for decks like Mono-Green Stompy, although the presence of the Dark Magician makes the competition unfair.

Players report frustration in local tournaments and Commander nights, where Vivi quickly ends matches. On the other hand, the community already expects the card's value to drop, but Final Fantasy still consider it an important collector's item.

What to expect after being banned

Even with Vivi's likely departure, Standard isn't free from new threats. As Klomparens points out, the format is still searching for a point of equilibrium. Therefore, the coming months should determine if other cards will also need adjustments.

Finally, the discussion shows how Universes Beyond have a real impact on competitive Magic, uniting fans from different franchises, but also creating balancing challenges.
