The film, released in 2007, was Shinkai's third work, following "Voices of a Distant Star" and "The Place Promised in Our Early Days." With a poetic narrative, stunning visuals, and profound dialogue, the film won the hearts of audiences both in Japan and around the world.

Therefore, the story follows Takaki Toono, who, over the course of 18 years, from childhood, when he meets Akari Shinohara, to his youth and the beginning of adulthood. Unlike the original, which was 63 minutes long and divided into three parts, the live-action version will be almost two hours long.
Directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, known for music videos for artists such as Kenshi Yonezu and Gen Hoshino, this adaptation marks his first large-scale feature film. Finally, Shinkai, who will not be directing, commented:
I'm thrilled to see how a young and passionate team is taking on '5 Centimeters per Second'. I couldn't replicate that work right now, and I trust that this new version will bring something unique to the present.
