The September issue of ARIA brought news that, although expected, surprised fans: the manga series Akumu no Sumu Ie: Ghost Hunt and Oyasumi Jack the Ripper will be ending. As announced last Thursday, both works will conclude their publication in the next issue of the magazine, scheduled for August 27th.

The original announcement for Oyasumi Jack, The Ripper played with the story as follows:

“One day, young Monsieur de Paris (executioner) Edward wakes up and finds himself in hell… Among the various monsters running loose, Ed encounters “that man,” who is once again disturbing the surface of the world!?”

The trio launched the manga in ARIA in June 2015. The manga announcement had originally attempted to place the series under Salon with the working title Jack, The Ripper . The second volume was shipped on April 7. The adaptation run took place from April 20-24 in Tokyo.

A farewell to two remarkable stories

Oyasumi Jack the Ripper , by Ai Ninomiya , Ikuhiro Nao, and Kinako , presented the public with a curious and daring plot. The story follows Edward , a young executioner from Paris who unexpectedly awakens in hell. There, he encounters various monsters and, surprisingly, a mysterious man who once again threatens the peace of the surface world. The manga, originally released in June 2015, had its second volume published in April 2017. Additionally, a theatrical adaptation took place between April 20th and 24th in Tokyo.

On the other hand, Akumu no Sumu Ie: Ghost Hunt , illustrated by Shiho Inada and based on the novel by Fuyumi Ono released in 1994, will also conclude its run. The manga adapts the rare novel of the same name, considered by many fans to be the "elusive sequel" to the original Ghost Hunt . Therefore, readers can expect the third and final volume of the work on October 7th.

The legacy of Ghost Hunt

Ghost Hunt storyline follows Mai Taniyama , a student who crosses paths with Shibuya Psychic Research , a paranormal investigation agency led by the enigmatic Naru . Over time, Mai joins an eccentric group composed of a Shinto priestess, a Buddhist monk, a self-proclaimed famous psychic, and a Catholic exorcist. In Akumu no Sumu Ie , the group investigates supernatural events at Midori's mother's house, expanding the series' mysterious universe.

ARIA published new chapters of Akumu no Sumu Ie every two months. The second volume of the series was released in April 2014. Shiho Inada had already finished the first Ghost Hunt in 2010. Furthermore, Del Rey published 11 of the 12 volumes of the original series in North America, while Funimation licensed and released the 25-episode anime on DVD in 2008.

Therefore, even with the conclusion of these stories, the legacy of Ghost Hunt remains alive among fans. After all, these works continue to spark curiosity and passion for paranormal plots.
