The anime streaming platform Crunchyroll experienced a sharp drop in net profit for its Japanese division in the fiscal period ending December 2025. According to data published in the official Japanese journal Kanpo, profit fell to 453 million yen, approximately US$2.85 million, representing a 63% decrease compared to the 1.239 billion yen recorded in 2024.

Despite the financial downturn, the company recently revealed that it has surpassed the milestone of 21 million paid subscribers worldwide. Furthermore, Crunchyroll underwent an internal restructuring in March of this year, including layoffs and the redistribution of functions among offices in different regions. The company stated that the changes are part of a new e-commerce strategy and not direct cost-cutting measures.

Changes after the Sony acquisition

Crunchyroll currently operates as a joint venture between the American company Sony Pictures Entertainment and the Japanese company Aniplex. Both belong to the Sony Group, headquartered in Tokyo. The platform gained even more strength after the acquisition of Crunchyroll by Funimation Global Group in 2021 for US$1.175 billion.
