fans Demon Slayer have unearthed an interview the editor gave to Livedoor's manga Koyoharu Gotōge was never at risk of cancellation, and that reader support came even before the anime premiered.

Check it out:

"Both the first and second chapters were well received. There were rumors that we were 'on the verge of cancellation,' but there was no such crisis. I think Kimetsu no Yaiba was only possible thanks to the readers who have supported us ever since.".

In terms of overall offline popularity, it was so popular that it earned a full-color front page in its seventh chapter, which is very rare and only happens with very popular series. Gotouge-sensei was completely shocked and decided to hastily create the illustration at that moment.”

Furthermore, he mentions that the manga's popularity began when Tanjiro fought the Demon Hand, which was before the anime premiered.

“I think it was around the time Tanjiro was able to defeat the Demon Hand. It seemed to me that the project's popularity finally exploded at that time. After that, Zenitsu and Inosuke appeared on the scene, and the main cast of characters was finally complete. I think that's always necessary; if it's not a group of three or four people, it becomes difficult to develop a character if they don't interact with each other.”

Rumors of cancellation that surfaced online in recent years claimed that the Demon Slayer manga only continued publication thanks to the anime. However, Katayama's interview shows that these are just rumors. Obviously, a large increase in sales came along with the anime, but the risk of cancellation never materialized.

Thus, the first season of Kimetsu no Yaiba premiered in April 2019, becoming a successful phenomenon with the movie. Finally, the second season premiered on December 5, 2021 in Japan. Furthermore, the third season premiered on Crunchyroll after the release of the movie To the Swordsmith Village - World Tour on February 2 in Japan.
