Production IG has acquired the rights to FLCL (Furi Kuri), which were previously held by the renowned Gainax (Neon Genesis Evangelion), a company IG itself worked on at the time. IG's intention is to maximize the potential of the title, including creating a remake of the anime.

The anime was the directorial debut ofKazuya Tsurumaki, who served as assistant director on Neon Genesis Evangelion. The series was originally released as an OVA on six DVDs in 2000. The story was also published as a two-volume manga by artist Hajime Ueda, and as a three-volume light novel by Yoji Enokido (who also wrote the anime's script).

The story takes place in a quiet town called Mabase, practically forgotten and "without anything interesting." In the center of the town is a huge factory (the town's economy) shaped like an "iron" called Medical Mechanica. The problem is that after the emergence of this industry, adults began to become "retarded" because of the white smoke that comes out of the factory every day and almost completely covers the town.
