The independent project Living in a World Without Magic (Mahoseka), created by illustrator Akiwashi in partnership with Euluca Lab., will be adapted into an animated feature film. The announcement comes after the original music video surpassed 6.39 million views on YouTube since its premiere in July 2022.

From independent animation to cinemas

Akiwashi was responsible for virtually the entire production of the original music video, acting as director, screenwriter, character designer, animator, background artist, CGI designer, and final composer. The project also featured the voices of Natsuki Hanae and philo. Later, the story was adapted into a novel by Mamoru Iwasa and published by Kadokawa.

The story follows Haru, a lost boy who is taken in by Sara, a mysterious one-eyed witch who lives on a floating island above the city of Urgalz. As their relationship deepens, a secret connected to the witches' past begins to emerge.

The project is already targeting an international audience

The film already has strategies aimed at the global market. The AnimeOshi platform has launched the “Mahoseka Film Club” campaign, allowing fans to support the upcoming production until July 8th. Furthermore, the Singaporean studio Kasagi Labo will present details of the project during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, in a panel with Masao Maruyama and Tony S. Izumi.

The international presence will also continue at Anime Expo 2026, where the studio will have a booth dedicated to the project. With this, Mahoseka takes an important step towards transforming a viral independent production into a globally appealing animation.
