The studio Pocketpair, responsible for the popular Pokémon World, released an update this Thursday (May 8, 2025) regarding the patent infringement lawsuit filed by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo. Therefore, since September 2024, the legal dispute has been causing controversy among fans and developers, raising doubts about the game's future.

First, it's worth remembering that the lawsuit alleges that Palworld infringes on three Japanese patents registered between May and August 2024. These patents protect mechanics familiar to Pokémon players, such as capturing creatures using throwable items, the system for switching between capture and battle, and even mounted traversal — including calling a flying companion to rescue the player in mid-air.

However, to avoid further problems, the studio decided to make important adjustments to the game. One example was Patch v0.3.11, released on November 30, 2024. In it, the method of summoning Pals using throwable orbs was replaced by a direct summoning next to the player. As explained by Pocketpair, this change was a necessary, albeit frustrating, compromise to keep development active.

Furthermore, Patch v0.5.5 will bring more changes, especially to the gliding system, which currently relies on so-called Glider Pals. Surprisingly, after the update, players will start using a separate item to glide, although the Pals will continue to offer passive bonuses. Therefore, it is clear that the team seeks to avoid further legal conflicts, even if it means giving up beloved mechanics.

The future of Palworld remains uncertain

Undeniably, fans are apprehensive. However, Pocketpair reaffirms its commitment to delivering new content and continuing to develop the game, despite the difficulties. "We deeply appreciate your continued support," the studio stated.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how this legal battle will impact the future of Palworld. After all, will players accept these changes willingly or will they demand reversals in the future?
