While The First Slam Dunk continues to have a strong presence in Japanese cinemas, Inoue participated in an interview with Cinema Today to discuss some aspects of his film. He took the opportunity to address the possibility of a sequel, but without confirming anything.

“If I said there will be [a sequel] or said there won’t be, wouldn’t that statement limit me? Like if I said there will be one, and there isn’t, that would be bad. And if I said there won’t be one, even if I feel like drawing one, I won’t be able to. So I’m not going to say anything now.”

Synopsis:

Slam Dunk tells the story of Hanamichi Sakuragi, a high school student and delinquent who is in love with the delicate Haruko Akagi, who introduces him to the world of basketball. Thus, the clumsy character begins to get involved in the sport with the intention of joining his school's basketball team just to get Haruko's attention. However, Sakuragi develops a genuine passion for basketball when he feels the adrenaline of the game. Alongside his captain Takenori Akagi, his rival Rukawa Kaede, and the rest of the team, he plays to win the inter-high school tournament.

Takehiko Inoue then published his iconic sports manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1990 to 1996, totaling 31 volumes. The manga inspired an anime in 1993 and received four sequels in animated film format.
