And now for some worrying news. A survey by a pharmaceutical company says that about half of single people under 30 in Japan have no interest in having children.

In Japan, single people want to have children

Therefore, those interviewed cited financial concerns and the burden of childbirth as reasons.

Of the 400 respondents aged 18 to 29, 49.4% said they did not want children, the highest percentage in the last three annual pregnancy surveys conducted by Rohto Pharmaceutical.

By gender, it was found that 53.0% of men and 45.6% of women are not interested in becoming mothers, citing reasons such as high cost and anxiety about the future of Japan.

The results of the survey conducted in January came after government data showed that the number of babies born in the country last year fell below 800,000 for the first time since records began in 1899. To reverse the trend of declining birth rates in a rapidly aging country, the government launched the Child and Family Agency in April, tasked with overseeing child policies.

According to the study, which also included 800 couples aged between 25 and 44, 48.1% of married men and women who wanted children cooperated with their partners' fertility efforts.

Finally, this number represents a significant drop compared to the 60.3% recorded in the fiscal year 2020 survey.
